Fireproof DVD

No, this isn’t to inform you of some kind of innovative BluRay indestructible disc, or anything like that.  It is just to make sure you know “Fireproof” DVDs go on sale this Tuesday.  I would urge you to buy a copy, if you did not see it at the theater.  It will touch you deeply, and challenge the way you approach marriage and life in general.  And buy a copy if you did catch it at the theater.  Let’s do all we can to support what could be the beginning of a new movement of theater-production films based on explicitly Christian themes and high moral values.

Skills

I’m going to take a big risk here, because my next statement may alienate many of you.  I really loved the movie, “Napoleon Dynamite!”  There, I said it.  Now that you know this warped truth about me, you will have to decide whether or not to stay connected with my website.  Anyway, there is a scene where Napoleon talks about having skills, such as being pretty good with a bo-staff.  In fact, another movie, “Six Days, Seven Nights” (which in my opinion was much lamer than Napoleon Dynamite) has some interesting dialogue about whether or not Harrison Ford is one of those men who have Skills.

We men seem to put a lot of stock in having Skills of various kinds – competencies in different things that seem to reflect authentic masculinity.  Sometimes we take this way too far, and get caught up in what John Eldredge refers to as “posing,” or a different response of just plain old hiding.  Both of these reactions are natural when we equate our masculinity with our level of Skills.  Let me be clear…our value as men is not measured by how much Guy Stuff we know or can do.  Character is a FAR greater factor in the equation of masculinty.

However, there is still something about having Skills that helps us walk a little taller as men.  And today, I find myself walking a little taller.  My wife recently bought this really cool thing for our son that is like a cross between a rope swing and a pogo stick.  He had played on one at a friend’s house, and absolutely loved it.  So she suggested we get one for him, and I agreed it was a great idea.  I scoped out the perfect place to hang it in our backyard.  There is a fairly high, sturdy limb in our live oak that forked at a place that would provide the perfect distance for the swing from both the trunk and from the swingset/climber in the yard.  I pulled the pogo swing out of the box, and had it assembled and all stickered up in about half an hour.  So far, so good.  All systems go.

Then it occurred to me.  I’m going to have to tie this to that branch somehow.  It is really important that this crazy bouncing swing be secured very well.  And my knot-tying skills basically consist of the one basic around-through-pull knot that a six year old girl could tie.  This is trouble!  I suddenly became very aware of a deficit in this particular Man Skills department.  Oh, if only my buddy Dave, the Eagle Scout / Scout Master were here.  Or his teenage Eagle Scout son, for that matter.  Then came the follow-up thought.  I do have that copy of “The Dangerous Book for Boys” that I haven’t really shared yet with my five year old son.  I think this would be a good time to pull it off the shelf.

So, with the help of my pickup truck, a six foot wooden ladder, my wife holding the ladder, and a brick tied to the end of the additional rope, my son watched me secure the extra rope to the branch with a well tied bowline knot and tie the swing rope to that rope with a firm sheet bend knot.  Now, I’m not saying I’ve eared a Scout badge in knots yet, or anything.  But I really do feel more competent and less intimidated by this once mysterious Skill.  And my son is having a blast!

My encouragement today is this.  If you find yourself lacking in a Skills department that seems important to you as a man, don’t just pretend to be competent, and don’t hide from situations that would expose your lack of Skills.  Do what you’ve got to do to learn and develop a basic grasp of that Skill.  Ask your buddy.  Ask your Dad.  Ask your son.  Consult a good book.  Do a Google search for crying out loud, but do yourself a big favor and learn that Skill by expanding your comfort zone.  You’ll be glad you did.  So for those of you who have always felt less than, because you can’t drive a standard transmission…

A bit more Dangerous,

Roger

Financial Freedom

I’m not one who typically sends email forwards (except for a select inner circle – you know who you are).  And I don’t think I’ve ever posted a church announcement on my website.  But this is too big an opportunity to keep quiet, so I am posting it here for any in the Baton Rouge area, or even within driving range of the BR community.

Dear Chapel Family,

For a number of years now our church has been offering the 10 week study by Crown Financial Ministries. Over 150 people have completed the course. Many have personally told me how significantly it affected both their biblical understanding of money and their personal handling of the money. In an effort to offer this life-changing teaching to others in our church and community, we are offering the Journey to Financial Freedom one day seminar by Crown Ministries. It is Saturday, January 24 from 8:30 am-4 pm at The Chapel in the Oaks (9611 Siegen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70810).

Yesterday, I talked with a graduate of the 10 weeks course who told me he was going to the seminar and bringing a friend! This is a great idea for those that could use help with their finances but don’t know where to begin. If your Spring has ’sprung’ like ours, there is a lot going on each weekend. It is like we’re still trying to make up from the month Baton Rouge lost in the hurricane!

I encourage you to consider this great opportunity. I encourage you to invite a friend and then attend together. We have alerted and invited many others from area churches. Our hope is that during this time of financial uncertainty, we can provide certainty of what God says about money and wealth through this one day seminar. Our vision is that people will find freedom, answers and peace in the God of all riches and his gift of Jesus!

You can register online for the seminar at http://www.crown.org/Events/default.asp

Let Go and Let God

You may have heard this little saying before.  I suppose it has been made most popular through 12-step based recovery programs.  It is also very wise.

I’m a problem solver.  It’s what I do for a living.  Well, there’s more to being a therapist than solving problems, but it is a big part.  And I’ve always been a whiz at working jigsaw puzzles.  I’d like to say I was the outstanding puzzle worker from a great puzzle-working family, but my Dad and my two sisters would probably quickly call me on that stretch.  Anyway…

I was in my empty new office on Friday, looking at the desk that happened to be available, and envisioning the rest of the furniture I will be bringing during the coming week.  And I was frustrated.  No matter how I arranged and rearranged the puzzle pieces, I couldn’t make them fit together into a pleasing big picture.  If you know me at all, you know how locked into a problem or project I can get until I get it solved.  And I was getting nowhere, except more frustrated and agitated.  And here I was in my new office at the new practice where I am so excited to be moving.  Something was definitely wrong with this picture.

So, by the grace of God, I was able to put into practice some of the growth and insight He has provided me over the last year or two, and realized that what was wrong with this picture must have been my attitude.  Pause.  Deep breath.  Just walk away, Rog.  No, I have to solve this all right now!  Just walk away.  Okay, okay.  I guess I am just making things worse.  Let it go, man.  Just let it go.  Wait – don’t just let it go.  Let go, and let God!  Father, I am tired and frustrated, but this office and move really means a great deal to me, and I want to have the right attitude, as well as setting up the best office for my self and my clients.  Please help me!  Thanks.”

Well, I strolled outside for a slow leisurely meander around the pond at CK Office Park, and finally settled on a stump overlooking the landscape.  I could feel God stilling and refreshing me.  My Father was reaching down, patting my back, and telling me He is with me, He is proud of me, and it will all be okay.  He will take care of everthing.  And then the beautiful gift of grace.  “Hey son…what about using a sofa table, instead of a desk?  ;) ”  Now, this may not sound like much as you read it in the context of my little blog post.  But it hit me with thunderously calming joy.  That was it!  Aaaahhhh!  The pieces came together in one glorious motion, and God gets all the glory.  He is so good!

Just one more little reminder for me and you why it is ALWAYS so good to let go, and let God.

Peacefully,

Roger

Same Town – New Office

Dr. Butner is moving!  To South Baton Rouge, that is.

Beginning February 1, I will have limited office hours available at my new practice location with Murphy Toerner & Associates, located at 17170 Perkins Rd, in C K Office Park, near the Highland Rd intersection. My new phone number there will be 225-753-7773.  I will continue seeing clients at Baton Rouge Christian Counseling Center through February 27, which will be my last day at my downtown office.  It has been a great blessing to have spent the last two and a half years at BRCCC, and I am grateful to our director – Dee Adams, my BRCCC colleagues, the great support staff, the Board of Governors, and the wonderful folks at First Presbyterian Church for giving me the opportunity and offering me so much encouragement and assistance along the way.  But seasons change, and times come along when we must strike out on new ground and face the next challenge and growth opportunity.

For more information about my new practice at MTA, check out our website, and feel free to email me any questions or appointment requests at roger@hopeforyourfamily.com
With Hope in Him,

Roger
